Girls Varsity Cheerleading
Updated on 07/16/2024

Cheerleaders are athletes that perform cheers, stunts, tumbling, and dances at games. Cheerleading runs during the Fall and Winter seasons with tryouts in August and October. St. Anthony’s has three cheer teams: Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity.  Freshman team is for freshman only; JV can be freshman, sophomores, and juniors; Varsity can be made up of all grade levels. Prior cheer and stunting experience are necessary for JV and Varsity; cheer experience is recommended but not required to make it onto the freshman team. Each team cheers at Home football games and basketball games; varsity attends some away games and championship games. The 2 seasons run from mid-August to the end of February/beginning of March; attendance at all practices and games is mandatory!  During the season, calendars will be given out in advance to help avoid conflicts. In addition, all three teams attend competitions against other Catholic school cheer teams. CHEER

The Boys Varsity Volleyball team had a great year.  The team was made up of mainly underclassmen and one senior.  They had their share of ups and downs.   This group of young men played extremely hard every time they stepped on the court.   They understood that they had a lot to learn.  The boys were the only team this season to take the top team, Kellenberg, to a five set match and they did it twice.  The first time they faced Kellenberg they lost the first set 23-25 came back in the second set to win 25-2, then dropped the third set 26-24  but came back to win the fourth set 25-22 after being down by 6 points.  Going into the fifth set there was no room for error since the final game only goes to 15 points.  Unfortunately, we lost that set 13-15.  It was an exciting match one in which our young team would build on.   The boys also had a thrilling match against Chaminade taking them to five sets as well.  The g

When the spring season began, the girls had a sprinkle of doubt, questions, and uncertainty about the season ahead. The season began with a lot of cancellations due to the weather. Though a chilly start of the season, the girls were able to keep our footing through some windy days and cold Saturday mornings. This season, like many others, we teach each athlete that sometimes you have to overcome certain adversities. This group of over 100 girls had a few missed steps but never any doubt on the assignment at hand.  Our group of seniors, led by captains, Megan Reilly, Riley Griffin, Alexya Platt, Victoria Coroddo, Amelia Dejoi and Elizabeth Scubla. Every day the captains organized warm ups and our pre practice routines.  The team had their Nassau Suffolk Catholic League Championships this past weekend at St. Anthony’s. The team scored over 100 points, as our girls scored in almost every event and, in some cases, more than one girl scored in an event.&nb

The spring track team began the season with many questions.  Winning the league title is a big challenge for a team at full strength, but this season, the track team found itself without many of its best sprinters, throwers, and hurdles.  It would take their best and then some to find a way to come out on top.  The team came together and thanks to some incredible individual efforts and team contributions, the boys were able to win their 15th  League Championship in a row. Seniors Jack Morelli, Collin McLaughlin, Gabe Wigutow, and juniors James Ciaccio, and Regan Macpherson excelled in 3 events each, getting a big chunk of the team's points in the winning effort. As we move into the State Catholic Championship, the Federation State Champs, and the Nationals, these young men and the team will continue to find a way to keep the Friars at the top.  Head CoachCoach Dearie has coached three seasons a year since 1984 (130 seasons in total and 82 at Saint Ant

The varsity tennis team had a great Season, led by Senior captains Johnny Shatinsky and Jordan Gonzales. Despite not having one of our key experienced players due to injury, the boys gave their all every match, finishing seasons 6 and 3. Coach Mccalla is proud of the team for their effort and never-quit attitude. You are all a great group of young men, and we are already looking forward to the off-season.  Head CoachCoach Mccalla is the head varsity tennis coach for both the girls and boys. In his time at St. Anthony’s, he led the Boys to two league championships. In two years as the girls' head coach, the girls have won one championship.

The 2024 Rugby Season started last November when the team's leaders decided to get together and create their own Pre-Season Workouts without any of the coaches' knowledge. Their desire to compete and win was evident at our first practice in January. Each of our seniors echoed the mantra of effort and accountability to each other, the coaches, and the team.  Each Grade solicited new players from their fall and winter sports to come out and try something different. Whether it was a player looking for a spring sport to stay in shape for football or an exchange student who wanted to try something new.  Each player understood what was expected from the team's leadership.   The practices are hard, and fitness for each player is required for the 15 players on the field to succeed.  Getting through the runs at the beginning of practice and the nonstop tackling drills each day, they looked forward to when the practice ended.  Players were then treated to a walking

The Boys' Varsity Lacrosse Team had a very successful 2024 season. The team played a very challenging schedule this season, with games against nationally ranked opponents from 6 different states. The team finished with a record of 12 and 2 and holds a current National Rank of #3 in the Country and #1 in NYS. During the 2024 campaign, the Friars beat Nationally Ranked Culver Academy, Haverford School, Darien, and St Johns DC, as well as Delbarton and Staples High School. Both are in contention for their local state titles. The season culminated with the Friars beating Chaminade for the second time on May 7th on Cy Donnelly Field. The win gave the Friars their fifth straight Catholic League and fifth straight Catholic State Title. It was truly a special way to end another remarkable season. Thank you to all the team members, particularly our seniors, for all they have done for our program! Head CoachCoach Wieczorek is a 1986 graduate of St. Anthony’s and in 2000 becam
